Hi,

First post...completely new to the game and have just purchased the Lithuanian skirmish set and was wondering which other skirmish set would be a good match for new players, in particular one that would potentially allow for expansion/complement the Lithuanian set if my friend then chooses another opponent.

Cheers

Meic

If you are thinking about ready sets, I would recommend:

1) PLC Gosiewskis Foray - this is a PLC skirmish, but quite different from other (winged hussars, reiters, dragoons and only 4 bases of Cossack-style cavalry). It might be a little overpowered however to counter it with standard PLC skirmishes at low point costs...

2) Swedes SWE-12 https://sklep.wargamer.pl/podjazd-krole ... we-12.html - this would give you dragoons and reiters which you can use as PLC (instead of polish dragoons you are allowed to use any western style - as many polish nobles/armies included mercenaries / their commanders liked them to be dressed in western styles, Any Reiters you can use in any western-style army and PLC).

3) You can buy Tartar skirmish set TAT-6 https://sklep.wargamer.pl/podjazd-tatar ... tat-6.html and later combine it with poles to form Polish-Tartar skirmish force. Or use Tartars as an allied regiment in some polish Divisions.

If you would like to experiment and mix sets, you can go for:

4) Polish volunteers as a skirmish set (Beware: it would be challenging to command!) - a lot of POL-5 sets https://sklep.wargamer.pl/pol-5-pospoli ... tarze.html and some standard skirmish PLC commanders POL-9 (https://sklep.wargamer.pl/pol-9-polscy- ... djazd.html):
or combined with historical special ones:
https://sklep.wargamer.pl/litewscy-dowo ... antow.html (Lithuania)
https://sklep.wargamer.pl/polscy-dowodc ... antow.html (Crown)
(NOTE: you use one guy from one of those sets and a standard bearer and a musician from the POL-9)
(NOTE: you need Armies of By Fire and Sword to understand which one is which one :P - https://sklep.wargamer.pl/rul-07-armies ... rsion.html)
You can use those guys later in many skirmishes (usually up to 6-8 bases), mix them with cossack-style cavalry, as a regiment in polish divisions and in some task forces.
It is a good historical enemy - to play kind of state army vs rebellion :)

5) Swedish detachment
- you need (all Swedish style) commanders (max x2), reiters (probably 8-12 bases) , dragoons (3-6 bases), musketeers (3-6 bases) and cannons (up to 2 bases).
- you can field this skirmish up to level 4 with a single cannon with SWE-12 https://sklep.wargamer.pl/podjazd-krole ... we-12.html
- you can use all of the figures in PLC at some moment (some skirmishes use musketeers, division can have mercenary regiments with reiters and infantry, there are task forces of some lithuanian magnats (historical landowners) that use western-style mercenaries).

6) Army of courland - it is hard to command afaik and requires some mixing of units becouse of historical reasons. Army for hardcore collectors ;) Can be used as an allied regiment in Lithuaninan Division.

7) Army of Royal City of Gdańsk similar to that of Courland and Sweden.

8. You can buy some Trasylvanians and make Polish-Transylvanian skirmish force later. This is not trivial thing, I have no knowledge how to do that :D.

Look at the army creator and experiment with things: http://ac.oim.wargamer.pl/

You can download current rulebook with all the rules and some new skirmish sets (which are kind of cool for PLC). Unfortunately it seems to me that it is only in Polish now. I think they are working on the English version now.

Thank you for the detailed reply, definitely food for thought. The Swedes are interesting, but edging towards the Tartars as I've also half an eye on the Ottomans...so many choices...
I've the army book but not to hand at the moment, will have to recover from storage.

Cheers

Tartars are a good choice as mercenaries if you want to expand your collection "to the east" (muscovites, cossacks, ottoman empire). Swedes are good for the other way - to the west (all western armies) :D ;)
