In Autumn 1673, after victory upon Turkish army in the battle of Chocim, hetman Jan Sobieski divided his troops. Jan Potocki took command on grouping blocking Kamieniec Podolski, while the crown banner-man Mikolaj Sieniawski led from 6 to 8 thousands soldiers in the direction of Jass - Moldavian capital. He was to strengthen position of hospodar Stefan Petryczajka (loyal to Poland) and fight off Turkish troops of Kaplan Pasza that invade Moldavia. Turks withdrawn from Moldavia in mid December up to fords on Dunaj river, chased by Polish cavalry. For the following month troops stationing nearby Moldavian capital started suffering from demoralization. Moreover, Polish troops acted as if they were stationing on enemy grounds, quickly turned local folks against them.
At that time the Porta was preparing the counteroffensive. Sultan Galga, led ~7000 Tatars and was aided with 2000 Turkish cavalry led by Kiurd Hussein Pasza. Joined forced advanced on Moldavia to gain control of Jass and remove blockade of Kamieniec Podolski. Tatars were reluctant to fight against Poles, but pressure from the Porta was so strong, they could not - as year before - resign from taking part in campaign.
As a front guard they sent Hadgy Giray with 1500 Tatars, 500 Turkish cavalry and 500 Moldavian cavalry recruited from Moldavian loyal to sultan. Undisturbed they approached Jass where they ambushed and scattered Polish forces of 400 cavalrymen.Survivors chased by enemy cavalry, alarmed Sieniawski. The crown banner-man moved his main forces into fields without data on enemy number, not even knowing if he will need to fight full scale battle.
Hadgy Giray returned undisturbed to sultans army with captives and data on Sieniawski forces.
On 11th January 1674 Polish troops abandoned Jass and started withdrawal. Three days later they were ambushed by Turks and Tatar forces. Poles suffered casualties, but they were able to break off enemy main forces and retreated in direction to Chocim.
