Hi, the game was recommended to me by a friend. The rules look a little daunting, but I'm sure it will be OK.

Are there any recommendations for an army choice for a newbie? Not too sure if some armies are more difficult to use/play than others.

Thanks,

N.

Newt,

Welcome to the game. I am just starting out myself as well.

I went with the Danish Skirmish Set for my first miniatures, as I really like the minis. To me an attraction of that boxed set is that it uses Western style models. I painted up mine to represent mercenaries, so that they could be used interchangeably for Swedish, Holy Roman Empire, Danish, or Polish armies.

Reading through the rules and various army lists, it seems the Western style forces have a little easier learning curve. Their armies seem to have lower model counts, and you can form some 'elite' style skirmish forces to keep the complexity down in terms of the amount and variety of models you require for your army.

My 2 cents, I am sure the true BFAS veterans will have even more advice for you.

I've seen that other players in London have Ottomans, Swedes and Brandenburg. What's an appropriate force to take on any of those - I was debating Tatars or Holy Roman Empire?

Leading Tatars are quite demanding job. Mostly they use 'Shoot & Scoot' tactic, so you have to be some kind of patient, consequent but flexible. HRE is very "solid" - I'll try them much more than these first.

Poles would be playable against all three.
They are not invincible superarmy,
but they are flexible and have lots of different units.

They seem to favor approach with shock cavalry (cossacks and pancerny) aided by dragoons and some light cavalry.
Mostly not in uniforms so may be either a pain or joy to paint denpending on Your preferences.

Turns out, after some hunting around, that I'd already bought a Muscovite Skirmish Force so I'll go with that one for now.

Thanks for the comments and advice.
