Charge through the bridge? 1 base against 3. 2 attacks vs 6. I had 6 armoured reiters, my opponent didn't even try to charge to keep his losses as low as possible. In a whole game, I lost two bases from shooting (but passed morale check) and I killed one in the same manner. Luckily I ended up controlling both bridge and ford, 9:3 in small, 4:2 in big points.

The bridge allowed for a frontage of 2 or 3 I cant recall ...

sweet!

Last caracole I was attacked with hit light cav that could have avoided charge with evading maneuver. :p
Devious imperial commander.

More often it seems that cavalry can caracole to soften up an infantry target in somekind of terrain giving tactical advantage before engaging in melee, preferably with infantry.

That is what I was thinking last night, as I often charge directly into infantry with a village scenario, without some preparation. Seems like a caracole with arquebuses might be nice to do first. 8)

I tried that a couple of times, but against infantry with 6+ save it doesn't have much of an impact. Best tactic against infantry in buildings seems to be to swamp them from all sides and get overwhelming majority.

Or if possible just shoot the buggers out ... which is harder for the western armies it seems

I wasn't talking about those IN buildings. That is just crushing into them and hoping for the best (if you actually need to do that). :-D

I have had a couple of games where infantry were just behind fences and if I remember correctly that isn't an armor of 6 (but 4, which sounds better - or is my memory really that bad?). 8-)

That is what you try to do with a caracole. :-D Why else do that?
Or did you mean shooting the buggers out with artillery?

LOL you guys all must misunderstand me ... or I could just be the about the worst general ever :)

I love theory-hammering it out ... and on paper caracole seems good ...but on table ... and granted I mainly had smaller western squadrons ... of what ...3 -4 bases? It always seems like Im moving line abreast for more efficiency .... I never had to caracole ... again ... in practice ... it seems I rarely found a moment to do it.

*hands in surrender* I concede ... Caracole is the coolest thing since sliced bread ... :)

Nah - most of the time charge with cold steel and blazing pistols is more efficient use of ammo and time.
But in some limited occasions just giving fire may have a place.
