Can't go too wrong in getting the regiment.
There never seems to be too much cossack cavalry in Polish force and mastering one troop type first may be enough.

After appetite is raised one can play around with army creator one can pick and choose what extras to get.
(Unless one goes for the classical all the otions choice :-) )

That was sort of my thoughts on it.

Speaking of, secondary questions: are their any Polish (not Lithuanian)skirmish lists which let one take Winged Hussars? I know those guys are a big draw for my friend, so it'd be nice be to able to sort of guide him towards being able to use them at some point without needing to go to Task Force or Division levels (although I imagine we'll eventually start playing TF down the road)

As far as I know, there are two, but both are Lithuanian (only lituaninans had this kind of imagination to take those guys with extremally long pointy sticks on recon missions ;) ):

Gosiewski's Foray (3 bases of winged hussars)
Skirmish force of Aleksander Hilary Połubiński (2 bases)

As before: you can buy Gosiewskis Foray with all figures included, nothing more.

It is more difficult to collect Połubiński, as his special figure is inside a big 6 base box of Lithuanian Winged Hussars (they are even more fancy dressed than 'plain' polish winged hussars ;) ). Of course for friendly battles you can use any model as a commander insted of dedicated Połubiński miniature. But still you need winged hussars.

One possible solution is to buy Gosiewskis Foray (again) and as far as I know all the figures might be used for Połubiński (you would probably need some more cossack-style cav.).

Second possible solution is to buy dedicated "Winged Hussars without lances" blister. This is funny fact that the Hussars quite often fought without famous lances (e.g. when with recon or simply when not enough lances available!). This blister has only 3 bases :)

I'd say that applies to a good 95% of the range for this game.
