He wanted to countermarch and didn't want to step the 2nd rank out of close range. Based on my understanding of the obstacle rules now, it would've been way better to countermarch backwards and not leave enough space for my bases between the fence and his guys, but that doesn't really seem fun.

I definitely suggested not moving though!!

Yeah I counter marched to make sure I got at least a second rank of full fire at close on the Panceri milling around in front of me ... i couldnt have guessed they would flounder around for so long ...so i wanted to take my good shots will i could :)
