I have read that when a Cossack becomes a full member of the host (a moloitsy) he has the right to wear red trousers. Is there some truth in it? Should I paint the majority of my Cossacks with red trousers?

I think it's just a myth but let's see what our beloved historians say.

What's the source?

Kadrinazi is on his holiday from forum but asks for source. It's rather myth.

I have it from a book titled "Kozaky Re-Enactors Handbook"
http://www.amazon.com/The-Kozaky-Re-Ena ... 1434832880

To quote the relevant passage:
"Men's Trousers: Sharaváry of period 1600 to 1657 or less baggy trousers. Only natural pale browns and beiges for Moloytzy, red, black or other expensive dye colors for Onsúls and above (some may wish to cover better materials with tar). Materials for the garment and all decorations must be in keeping with the period."

Something similar for sashes:
"Sash: All members must wear a sash, normally darker colors for Moloytzy, red or poyo for Onsaúls and above. Higher ranks may have fancy silk types."

There's a dictionary for the ranks which defines:
Chern: Rank and file, but proven Kozaky - May wear red trousers.
Moloytzy: Unproven Kozaky

And in the glossary:
Chern: Rank and file Kozak
Onsúl: Lower officer
Molodytsý : Young Kozaky

All spelling and highlightings as in this book. It is printed in the USA. So I guess the "ch" in "Chern" should be pronounced as "cz" in Polish or as "tsh" in English.
