I was wondering, now that command bases are more like markers that can be attached to a unit, rather than a real extra base in the Revised Edition rules, perhaps the square bases are not really necessary anymore? A round 4cm diameter base could offer some more interesting modelling opportunities for a command base. This would also make it a lot easier to recognize command bases in my storage boxes.

They kind of are. In case of close combat in which commander participates as a base it still is treated as square/rectangular base (for distance measurements/flanks etc.) When shooting a pistol/bow you measure distance from center of the edge so it might also affect the game.
But it looks much better though

Ok, nice idea, but not feasible I guess.

Assuming 4*3 mounted commander vs. 4 cm diameter round differences would be:
with centers in same place about 5 mm closer range to a target right in front.
conversely 5 mm longer range to opponent shooting from direction of the corner

- advantage to user of round bases

- command range behaves similarly: now troops in direction of corner are harder to command, with ones right in front marginally easier -
IMO no net advantage or disadvantage

- flank: with a round it should (in my opinion) be marked as 90 degrees of the circle - slight disadvantage to user of round bases - the sector becomes wider angle.

- Overall I would have no trouble accepting it in my table. I don't know if it would be worth the hassle for Wargamer to accept it though.
