So I hate painting horses but since I got a starter from a friend in which all horses were already painted
I was really lucky (for real: even if I started with my own starter, I probably never painted the damn horses)

So here are some pictures. I finished them in two days quick work o just painting base colours and adding AP quickshade.

Nice looking. I'm just finishing my Swedish starter box too. As the detachment, how do you plan to organize them? I see two options from the list in the revised rulebook:
1. from the base line 2 x 2 base reiter and a 3 base dragoon, from the next line 2 base veteran dragoon plus the regimental gun OR
2 from the base line 1 x 2 base reiter, replace the other 2 base reiter with a 2 base dragoon, 3 base dragoon, from the second line 2 base veteran reiter plus the regimental gun.
In other words, choose a veteran dragoon or a veteran reiter.

For the veterans on the list, what are the pros and cons of the choice? Am I reading it right?
I also have a blister of reiter with arquebus awaiting paint.
Thanks,
Phil

Thanks.

@Valmy92: Since I´ve never played game before I have no idea yet. I will test what works best.

cheers

Yep, you're reading it right. TBH, at the 4-5 point level starter games with Swedes don't worry about what works better. Just get it on the table and see how the game plays. In practice, that is just too small a force to be very effective, even with effects and such.

In general, a 2 base reiter unit which can't be squadroned into something larger (because it's the only veteran unit) is going to have a hard time doing anything useful. A 2 base veteran dragoon unit, on the other hand, can be useful because it can garrison buildings, defend terrain. It's still vulnerable, but you're not going to be charging it at the enemy.

Actually, you could put those 2 veteran reiter bases in with the regular retiers (and give up their veteran stats).. It's a bit of a waste, but again, at that starter level it might be fun.

Thanks for that. Near term games are likely to be starter sized on both sides. When the Polish cossack style are also two bases is this less of an issue?

Sure, but cossack style cav typically comes in 3 base banners. uh.. I guess some builds allow for under strength 2 base banners. But they would typically be in larger squadrons as well. 3 bases is the smallest effective unit I've seen.

Thanks, I'll definitely keep that in mind as I build up. The Polish skirmish box came with a 3 base Panceri with spears, a 3 base Wallachian and 2 2 base cossack style. I've added a two base dragoon since that's the only dismountable unit available to the Polish skirmish list.

Ah right. So those two 2 base cossack banners would almost always get fielded together in a 4 base squadron. The only way I can see them operating separately is if they get split by a reconnaissance effect or one gets delayed..
